Things went horribly wrong. It was a real fiasco. We tried to {compensate|mitigate the situation, but it was like trying to stop a flood with a cocktail stick. We're still picking up the shards and feeling the impact of this unmitigated catastrophe.

This problem has spiraled out of control. It's a total catastrophe. We've tried anything to fix it, but nothing seems to be effective. At this point, it feels like we're toast. Honestly, I don't know what else to do. This is a nightmare of epic proportions.
That's So Cringe, It's Hilarious (In a Way)
Sometimes you encounter situations so horrifically bad that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to understand the sheer magnitude of unadulterated absurdity and just throws its hands up, opting for amusement as a coping mechanism.
But then, you remember that it's not really hilarious. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you were experiencing morphs into a sigh.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of utter perplexity. You question about the purpose of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just simply unfortunate enough to witness this spectacle unfold?
Tragedy of Epic Proportions
The tsunami struck without warning, consuming entire cities in its path. Buildings crumbled like fragile toys, and the roar that ensued was deafening. Thousands were left beneath rubble, their fate unknown. The severity of the disaster was unprecedented, leaving survivors to confront a future forever scarred.
Rescue efforts sprang into action, battling against time and treacherous conditions to rescue those still alive. The global community watched in horror as the full magnitude of the disaster became apparent, offering support to the affected population.
Worst Day Ever
It all started with a case of uncontrollable hair. I couldn't figure it to look decent. As I was dashing out the door, I stumbled and landed all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was totally running behind for a very important appointment.
I arrived. My {boss|mentor|was absolutely furious. I tried to explain, but it was a complete disaster.
The rest of the day was even worse. Everything. I get anything done.
By the time I got home, I was exhausted. This day, this horrific day will be forever remembered as an epic fail.
Things Went From Bad to Absolutely Terrible
It all started out badly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then everything went from bad to absolutely here terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to scream into a pillow.
